Ipl T20 – Around 30-35 talent scouts are looking for players for the first season of Indian Premier League.
Mystery bowlers who can produce some surprises and hit fours and sixes, especially over the middle and overs, are looking again. Around 30-35 talent scouts, including former Indian players like Parthiv Patel, Ashish Kapoor, TA Sekhar, Pragyan Ojha, Rahul Sanghvi and Vijay Dahiya, are set to identify players for the first season of Indian Premier League (IPL).

Apart from the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, these scouts will also travel to various cities to spot the best talent for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Under-25 Knockouts, Tamil Nadu Premier League and Maharaja T20 KSCA Trophy.

“It’s a tough job and a lot of homework needs to be done before a franchise looks for talent. There are about 50 days in the year and I have to see almost all the T20 events around the country to collect player stats because now IPL is more about data,” said a franchise scout on condition of anonymity.
“We continue to look for raw talent, especially mystery players and consistent players. Last year, I saw 3-4 players with raw talent, especially in the game of bowling above 145 kmph for a franchise from the rural areas of the state, and those pacers are being trained by the franchise,” he said.
However, he said that even though there is a small sale now, the scout still needs to work hard for the new season. “The franchise needs players now because of the low sales, but we are trying to identify the talents,” he said. “We find talent in exchange. A player is evaluated by several scouts from one franchise,” he said.
He also said that some franchises look for raw talent during school cricket matches as these talents are valuable for the future. “Many of those cricketers have done well in the past. Franchises don’t think it’s good to lure a cricketer because sometimes another franchise buys that cricketer in the auction, so it’s better to get your own talent.

Franchises like Mumbai Indians and some others send their support staff as scouts when they see fit before hiring a professional for the job. “We have a very good, balanced side. We have a lot of all-rounders and give the captain flexibility,” said Mumbai Indians coach and scout TA Sekhar.
“If the player is good, we ask him to go for trials. We have our own stadium where you can practice 365 days at any time. Our players are playing for the brand of Mumbai Indians and we are doing many good things outside the field to bring the positive side,” he said.
So how does he spot talent quickly when scouting? “The fast bowler has to choose – the yorkers, the slower balls, the slower bouncer and the batsman. It should take advantage of all options. And in terms of flour, I have a different experience. If he’s a bowler, I look at how he does fast bowlers and whether he can bowl the ball or deliver more specific balls,” he said.
“A middle batsman should be able to swing the strike. I’m also looking for a player who can hit sixes and fours in the last four.”

Some IPL scouts take their video data to spot talent. “The video analysts are very helpful in identifying the skills of a player. Last year, I sent the video images of some raw talents to the club officials and one of those talents was immediately called for a test,” said a scout, who did not reveal his name.
He also said that apart from having 18-24 cricketers in a side, some franchises like to hire youngsters as gridiron players. “Most of these volleyball players are from local games and for a small fee of 3-7 thousand. season price of Rs. Apart from Parthiv Patel, Ashish Kapoor and TA Sekhar, players like Vincent Vinay Kumar (Punjab Kings), Suresh R (KKR) and Srinath (SRH) are participating in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in Lucknow.
