India led by Rohit Sharma started the ODI series against the West Indies in perfect fashion, sealing a six-wicket victory in the series opener in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The hosts were brilliant in both departments of the game as they grouped the West Indies for 176 first and completed the chase in just 28 overs.
Yuzvendra Chahal was the star of the Indian pitch and was also named man of the match for his 4/49 in 9.5 overs. However, former India Test opener Aakash Chopra was unhappy with the team’s tactics, claiming that management showed no confidence in the newcomers’ bowling ability, taking cues from IPL sensation Venkatesh Iyer and debutant Deepak Hooda.
Hooda, making his international debut, has shown in the past that he can bowl some quick overs in the middle. Though his serves with the ball weren’t necessary, the 26-year-old made sure to come in with the bat. The debutant drew an unbeaten 62 run off Suryakumar Yadav to take India home.
Meanwhile, Iyer was also picked up as an all-round prospect by the IPL Kolkata Knight Riders franchise. However, he was little used with the ball in the three ODIs against South Africa which India lost 0-3.

A section of fans were not impressed by Chopra’s statement, with one stating that a sixth bowler was not needed in the series opener in Ahmedabad.
Chopra responded quickly, stating that “The best time to try new options is when there’s little or no pressure.”
