The field is circular with a rectangular area in the middle, known as the pitch, which is 22 yards (20.12 meters) by 10 feet (3.04 meters) in short. Two sets of three sticks, called wickets, are placed on the ground at each end of the pitch. At the top of each wicket are horizontal pieces called bails. The sides alternate between batting and bowling (pitching); each turn is called an “innings” (always more). The bowler delivers six balls to the wicket (thereby completing an “over”), then another bowler from his side bowls six balls to the other wicket. The batting side defends its wicket.
There are two batsmen at a time, and the bowler being bowled (the batsman) tries to hit the ball away from the wicket. Hitting can be defensive or offensive. Defensive batting can protect the wicket but the batsmen don’t have time to run to the other wicket. In such cases the batsmen should not finish, and the game continues with another bowl. If the batsman takes a bad hit, he is the second (non-batsman) at the alternate wicket. Whenever both batsmen reach a different wicket, a run is scored. If they have enough time without being caught and dismissed, the batsmen can continue to cross back and forth between the wickets, scoring another run each time they reach the other end. There are external boundaries around cricket. A ball that hits or goes over the boundary gets four points if it hits the ground and reaches the boundary, six points if it reaches the boundary from the air (fly ball).
