No one buying gear for the new season has any idea if the gear is ethically or sustainably made and that needs to change

It might not be your choice of breakfast table topic, but we need to talk about cricket gear. During the quarantine summer of 2020, Professor Martin Charter of the Center for Sustainable Design (CfSD) in Surrey and the British Association for Sustainable Sport (Basis) brought together stakeholders to discuss issues related to the manufacture of cricket equipment. They weren’t quite sure what they would find.

After Tuesday’s demonstration at the DCMS committee meeting, it may come as no surprise to learn that one of the biggest problems they have faced in the game is a lack of transparency.
“While a lot of work has been done on sustainability and cricket at a macro level, for example in a cricket stadium, when we get to manufacturing, it’s very different,” says Charter. There is very little research out there in the public domain, especially when you consider that we are talking about the second biggest sport on the planet. We know little about the supply chain. For example, there is a lot of outsourcing to Asia with unknown details.
The final report on sustainability, cricket equipment, clothing and apparel, published last week, revealed a lack of information from manufacturers on issues ranging from labor rights and child labor to working conditions.
As the Charter points out, football began to address a number of these issues in the 1990s (although stories of abuse still emerge) – with the World Federation of the Sports Goods Industry (WSGFI) working alongside FIFA to to guarantee your license. Produced in accordance with the WFSGI Code of Conduct. There seems to be no such plan in cricket.

There is also a lack of knowledge about the environmental footprint of this industry. There are big questions about water pollution, carbon emissions, microplastics and waste – but not many answers to be found.
The Charter emphasizes that this lack of responsiveness does not necessarily indicate fundamental problems. However, this means that no one is waiting for the new season to buy a lot of how to handle their new gear. Good performance certainly doesn’t shout from the rooftops as sustainability information is not usually shared on cricket equipment suppliers’ websites.
And what happens at the end of Kate’s life? Are huge packages of shirts, pants, sweaters, and padding stored in closets or garages, or have they all been packed, shipped, and sent to the landfill? The answer again is that we just don’t know.

India’s Cricket Bat Business In Danger
There seems to be great potential for re-use of cricket gear, where interest often wanes after a season or when kids move from softball to hardball cricket and when the kit grows from summer to summer. This would make the game more accessible to those on lower incomes – something recently highlighted by stories of families being charged hundreds of pounds to access county tracks – and help the circular economy.
This could be something as simple as moving whites, the more complex process of re-using helmet grids or rearranging cricket nets. Professionals are often a prime example of this, restoring and reusing their favorite bats until they fall to pieces.
Charter hopes that cricket can relate to the kind of work introduced by Play it Again Sport, a small social enterprise in Wales which tries to ensure that all sports equipment is reused and nothing goes to landfill.
A cricket does not always help itself. There was a test case in 2019 when Gray-Nicholls produced a pair of durable gloves made from production waste – and cricketer Sam Billings wore them for a few warm-up matches. The International Cricket Council then banned him from wearing those balls for the white-ball series against New Zealand because they contravened an unusual color rule.

With no available data to work with, the CfSD conducted an exploratory environmental impact study of five pieces of cricket equipment.
The results concluded that it was worth it for manufacturers to invest in plant-based leather for cricket balls, something former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie, a prominent vegetarian, had previously called for. It also suggests research into possible alternatives to willow, with studies into the viability of bamboo cricket bats being carried out by researchers at the University of Cambridge.
The report also included a fascinating paragraph on UK bat and ball production: Unfortunately, the industry is on its knees. Red List of Endangered Crafts May 2021 The Heritage Crafts Association has declared the manufacture of hand-stitched cricket balls in the UK extinct. The UK cricket bat industry is almost as sick and has been classified as an ‘endangered species’. As many practitioners head towards retirement age, there may be an opportunity here for the England and Wales Cricket Board or even the Professional Cricketers’ Association to support apprenticeships.

With the help of Basis, CfSD launched the PASIC website as a forum for information and to stimulate discussion on the sustainability of cricket equipment and apparel. Future projects plan to focus more on the circular economy and cricket apparel.

During the process of compiling the report, Charter spoke to a number of former and current players, including former South African player Darryl Cullinan. He believes there is a real interest in the industry becoming more sustainable, but needs high-quality research to assess environmental and social awareness in the sector and action by the game’s governing bodies. Good luck with that. A cricket bat is a specialized piece of equipment used by a batsman in the sport of cricket to hit the ball, usually consisting of a stick handle attached to a flat-headed willow blade. It can also be used by the club making the serve to prevent it from falling by holding the club and touching the serve with it. The bat may be no more than 38 inches (96.5 cm) long and no more than 4.25 inches (10.8 cm) wide. Its use was first mentioned in 1624. Since 1979, a rule change has stipulated that cricket bats can only be made of wood.
The blade of a cricket bat is a block of wood that is usually flat on the striking side and has a ridge on the back (back) that compresses the wood in the middle of where the ball is struck. The bat is traditionally made from willow wood, specifically a variety of white willow called cricket willow (Salix alba var. caerulea), treated with crude (uncooked) linseed oil, which has a protective function. This type of willow is used because it is very hard and impact-resistant, does not scratch significantly when hit by a high-velocity cricket ball, and is also lightweight. The face of the bat is often covered with a protective film by the user. In 1900, Percy Stewart Surridge developed a reinforced finger.
The blade is attached to a long cylindrical cane handle similar to the handle of a mid-20th century tennis racket. The handle is usually covered with a rubber grip. The bats have a wooden spring design where the handle meets the blade. The design of a cane handle attached to a willow blade by a conical joint was inspired by Charles Richardson, Brunel’s pupil and the first chief engineer of the Severn Railway Tunnel in the 1880s.
Jointed handles were previously used, but these broke at the joint angle. The taper provides a gradual transfer of the load from the clubhead to the handle and avoids this problem.

The edges of the blade closest to the hilt are known as the bat shoulders and the bottom of the blade is known as the bat toe.
Bats weren’t always like this. Before the 18th century, bats were shaped like modern hockey sticks. This may be a legacy of the game’s storied roots. Although the earliest forms of cricket are unclear, it is possible that the game was first played with shepherd’s crooks.
The bat, believed to be the oldest in existence, dates back to 1729 and is on display in the Sandham Room at the Oval in London.

When first purchased, most bats are not ready for immediate use and need to be hit so that the soft fibers hit the new cricket ball without damaging the bat and full power is transferred to the shot. Batting involves hitting the surface with an old cricket ball
