The Casino Theater originally opened as the Willis Theater in late December 1923. It is located near 138th Street in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx, NY. The 2,166-seat theater was designed by architect Eugene De Rosa, known for his New York City theaters such as the Apollo Theater in Harlem, Studio 54 in midtown Manhattan, and St. George Theater in Staten Island.

It was not a successful theater and was closed and reopened several times in the 1920s, often with a change of structure. In 1936, the theater went from vaudeville to burlesque when the director reviewed “The Last Lady,” and even had a brief stint as a Broadway theater.

Willis renovated and renamed the Casino in 1939 to coincide with the World’s Fair at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York. It was closed for the last time as a film center in the 1960s. A few years later, the hall was replaced by a supermarket. However, it is not completely broken, at least. Instead, the hall’s reception area and orchestra were demolished and turned into a supermarket. The balcony is all that remains of the casino today.

Theater began with McCall Comic Opera Company productions. It was managed first by the producer and inventor Rudolf Aronson, then by Kanner & Lederer from 1894 to 1903 and by the Schuberts from 1903. It was demolished that same year, along with the nearby Knickerbocker Theater, to make way for the burgeoning Garment District.

In the 1880s and 1890s the Casino hosted a series of successful operettas and other musical theater productions, including the highly successful Ermini.

In 1891, it premiered Cavalleria Rusticana in America, and in 1894 produced its first Broadway production, The Passing Show. In 1898, White hosted the first film of Clorindy, or The Origin of the Cake Walk, the first African-American musical to be performed before Odysseus.

The theater is best remembered for its 1900 production of the Edwardian musical comedy, Floradora. At that show, he was the first theater in New York to present the “Florodora Sextet” line. The original sextet included many women who later achieved fame and fortune. The proposal “raised the chorus girl … to admiration itself.”

Over the next decade, musical theater and operettas followed, some of the most successful being A Chinese Honeymoon (1902), The Earl and the Maiden (1905), and The Chocolate Soldier ( 1909). During World War I, it hosted many Princess Theater musicals, including The Blue Paradise (1915) and Sometime (1918), among others. In the 1920s, the theater was home to several hit operettas, most notably The Vagabond King and The Desert Song.

The final performance was the opera Faust, performed by the American Opera Company on January 18, 1930, with Tor Charles Cullman in the title role and soprano Nancy McCord as Marguerite.
