R/cricket – On Cricket R Ashwin: “I’ve always been good at judging batsmen, but now I think I’ve taken it to another level”

The Indian spinner tells us how he uses batsmen’s technique before and during the series, his struggles with injuries and more.

One of the most remarkable things about R Ashwin is how much he prepares for cricket. He says he needs it. His body is not the most athletic and he has had many injuries since childhood. So he needs all the extra benefits he can bring to the field in order to compete in the elite sport.

This interview took place in the program for a year. With Ashwin taking a few days off between the New Zealand series and the South Africa tour, we managed to steal some of his personal time to talk about his preparations for the tournament. What was revealed was not the smallest detail that goes into the formulation of a strategy, but the amount of work on his body to be able to play at a high level.

I want to focus on how you prepare for big series because I believe you are one of the best cricketers in the world. I remember you once said that it is easier for a natural athlete like Ravindra Jadeja to get himself up and bowl 30 overs a day, but someone like you has to fight with his body. When do you start preparing for the series?

Preparation has two aspects. One is physical and the other is mental and tactical. I think people don’t put enough emphasis on tactics. I’m not saying that tactical preparation is a must because I’ve played in the world of cricket where people really want to rely on their skills, their strengths and not focus on tactics.

When it comes to physical preparation, from 2017 to 2019 I suffered from this injury called patellar tendinitis. It’s not that you can’t play it, but the beauty of the injury is that the knee doesn’t get hot. In the morning, even walking can be very painful. They open when the weather gets warmer, but you can’t jog. It takes at least two or three rounds to get it right. The pain never really goes away.

I Looked At Bad Days As ‘great Coaching Opportunity’: Former India Fielding Coach R Sridhar

It happened first on my right leg, which is the leg I take off in bowling. Therefore, jumping is very difficult. You have to jump a little, you have to walk on one leg for at least a few seconds before you release the ball. So it became very difficult. Even my workouts started getting tough. And eventually the left leg was also injured because of the extra load he had to carry.

“Compassion is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and feel, ‘What if this happened to me?’” I feel like the cricket community, it’s not enough.

Then I had sports pubalgia which I believe was an extension of the original injury. Every other part of the body had to compensate for what the knee couldn’t.

Then I started jumping into different activities. Due to sports pubalgia, it is difficult to get into the side position all the time. Then, after about ten hours of spells, suddenly no more energy passed through the body. Then I tore my abs, then I tore my adducts. It was like dominoes.

Those wounds left me with many scars. The perception of injuries in the cricket community [in India] is deplorable. Of course there’s a reason why I got hurt, but we’re not interested in that. We’re just repeating that a problem is a problem, but that doesn’t help me find a solution. And don’t shame someone who has been hurt.

A lot of teammates were injured, but when I was injured, he seemed to be more. There was unconsciousness for the injury. I was seriously injured. I went to county cricket and thought, ‘I’ve got to get through the day.’ I should have 25 overs but I won’t hurt myself. Because if I hurt myself in county cricket, I would have raised my eyebrows eventually.

One thing that will forever hurt me is when people talk about how I didn’t want to play or how I ran away from the competition. You can label me, you can fire me, that’s all good, but doubting my intentions or fighting hurts me.

I undergo four weeks of training before joining any series. In the morning I focus entirely on my mobility and the affected area. Sling type work, fascia type work. I hold the position. Then two hours later after breakfast I go to the gym where I build muscle. In the evening, alternate days I run, alternate days, I do skills.

Because of these injuries, I went to the front position, to the side position, to the sling position, and so on. I have it all in my head and I go to all these places to see how my body reacts. For example, if I have a broken leg, the shoulder on one side of the shoulder blade starts to hurt because that side is overloaded. I go to all these places to feel the pain and then I talk about the pain.

The best preparation time is six weeks. If you have six weeks to spare, you can pass a series of four to five exams just by practicing. A few years ago, I made sure to go into each set with a certain weight and maintain it.

As I struggled with my injuries, I struggled to find answers to why I was injured. I even started going to strength and conditioning classes because the injuries were affecting my career and health.

I started strength training in 2009, but it was very basic. In 2012, Rajamani [AT Rajamani Prabhu] came to my house and told me, “I want to be your coach and make a difference.” From 2012 to 2015 or 2016, he did everything for me and worked with the team coach Sudarshan. Then when Shanker Basu became India’s coach, the approach was completely different. And if you have a trainer who does something else and is completely left behind and is a trainer in India, you better follow these protocols. It’s easier for everyone.

I finally returned to Rajamani. I haven’t trained with him in two years. He took it personally. He also learned to be a better coach. He achieved some of Basu’s methods. I had to tell him, “I don’t want you to do what Basu is doing to me. Do what you are doing to me.” And there were things I learned A, B, and C that I shouldn’t have done. That’s how I got back on the road. I am very thankful to Rajamani and Basu.

Between 2018 and 2020, I thought about leaving the sport in different ways. I thought, “I tried so hard, but it didn’t work.” The more I tried, the farther it went. Especially with sports pubalgia and patellar tendinitis – I used six balls and then got out of breath. And there is pain everywhere. So you have to make adjustments. As the knee pain worsened, I might have jumped a little more on the next ball. When I jumped a little, it was clear that moving the pubalgia required power generation through the core, back and shoulders. Therefore, the third ball is to the side to try using the hips. After finishing six balls, I’d be like, “I need a break here.”

“You can tag me, you can fire me, it’s all right, but doubting my intentions or fighting hurts me.”

Wtc Day One: India Blows Big Opportunity

I have considered retirement for a number of reasons. I felt that people were less sensitive to my injuries. I feel like a lot of people are fired, why not me? I did no less. I won a lot of games for the team and I don’t feel safe. I usually don’t seek help – I need someone to support me, someone to hit me, or someone to sympathize with. I realized that I couldn’t be perfect and felt that I needed a shoulder to lean on. That didn’t happen. I thought maybe
